The Displaced Cactus

Adventures of a former desert dweller transplanted to Washington

Months of Adventure Coming Up!

I didn’t get to travel much last year. Basically other than moving up here and going to weddings back in AZ, I stayed put. That is not the case for 2018! I have packed the first half of the year full of genuine out-of-state adventures. Here’s where my journeys will take me:

Salem, OR! Next weekend, my dancing alter ago is going down to Oregon for a weekend of belly dancing in the woods. I’m going to take Amtrak down, which will also be a new experience for me. I’m a little skeptical of them given recent, tragic derailing accidents, but it’s not like driving on the highways is exactly safe, either, and at least this way I can spend 3.5 hours reading, instead of listening to podcasts and cursing bad drivers.

Portland, OR! Look, I really like Oregon, ok? Chris and I will be spending a weekend down in Portland next month for our wedding anniversary. Chris has only been to Portland once, for a day trip where they got really sick, so I am looking forward to us having a few days to enjoy ourselves and not get food poisoning from dodgy Thai iced tea.

Oakland, CA! Another adventure for my alter ego. I’ve been invited down to the Bay Area to teach a dance workshop. How exciting, right? I’ll probably tack a couple days onto my trip for some exploring. I was in the Bay in 2016 right before I moved up to WA, and I had a lot of fun there.

The Netherlands and Beyond! In May, my biggest adventure ever: I’M GOING TO EUROPE! I have been saving my Alaska Airlines credit card points for this trip for almost two years. I’ll be visiting a friend who lives in Amsterdam, and together we will visit some different areas of The Netherlands and either Belgium or Germany (I haven’t decided which yet, but there are cities in each country just a 2.5 hour drive away from Amsterdam, so it’ll be an easy day trip). I’ll also have layovers in London and Reykjavik, not long enough to leave the airports but it’ll still be exciting to land in those countries and maybe pick up some treats in the airport shops.

The second half of the year will probably involve a lot of staying close to home and working hard to make back the money I spent on my adventures!

I can’t wait to share these adventures with all of you through this blog and my Instagram. And if you have any suggestions for specific things I should do on any of my trips, let me know!
